AltaSea, is a non-profit organization dedicated to spurring ocean-related science. Per Dr. Sandra Whitehouse, AltaSea’s Chief Scientific Officer, “This facility will catalyze the connections among scientists, educators and business men and women that will accelerate finding solutions to some of the ocean’s greatest challenges.” AltaSea just unveiled the designs for the 35-acre campus on the Port of LA’s historic City Dock No. 1 from Gensler, a global architectural firm. The new facility will be built in multiple phases featuring hubs for:
- Research & Business
The design includes parks, walkways and public plazas. What appears to be unique, however, is the creation of Linear Park, which will be an education park where much of the AltaSea seawater supply infrastructure will be made visible along its length for visitors to learn about the various stages of its filtration, use, and reuse before it is naturally cleansed and circulated back into the ocean. Ground breaking for Phase 1A is expected this year.
